Not a lot new (04/19/07)
I figured I should say something since it's been two months, but, honestly, there's not a lot to say. We've got a new forum style rigged up at our new main website at http://spindash.net--The site itself is unrelated to this one, as far as content goes, but the style we created there will be adaptable for use here. I just need to get around to it. Beyond that, it's pretty much business as usual. We're still alive. Yahoo.
Of outages and updates (02/19/07)
As many of you noticed, we were down and out for almost a week not too long ago. The situation is somewhat explained on the news forum, but, frankly, with it behind us, I'd rather not go into the nitty-gritty details of the host collapse. Instead, the main thing I'd like to direct attention to is again the wiki, and the fate of our character profiles. Virtually all profiles on the Characters page of this website are now outdated in some way, shape, or form. As of the 24th of this month, I intend to have them all taken down, in hopes of (somewhat forcibly) accelerating the process of the move to the wiki. After that, the Characters page will just link to the individual wiki articles, for the sake of user convenience.
Anyway, besides that, we're finally coming up on the long-dragged-out closer of our current story arc. It's been building for a long time (and sort of flopping and seizing at times, too), but it's almost finished. When it does, it'll have some pretty major effects on the characters and their world, and hopefully, we'll have a nice, fresh start ahead of us, leading into a slightly less... "RARRR WAR" storyline, at least for now. Oh, but don't worry--We're not building up to another retcon.
Five day cliffhanger (02/04/07)
Hey,
everybody. Due to a matter of necessity, the story will be holding exactly where
it is for the next five days, until February 10th, or possibly even 11th. Reason
being, Ben (as in Ben2, or Bengreens, or Greens, or Groobs, or whatever you
prefer to call him), our main villain guy, will be out of town as of tomorrow
and probably won't be able to pop any posts in until he gets back.
However, that doesn't mean there's absolutely nothing to do around here until
then. As most of you have probably noticed, we're in the process of moving
things to the wiki.
That being said, there are still a buttload of character profiles that need to
be reformatted and moved over, so I suggest using this lull to swoop your
characters over there.
To get started, create an account (if you haven't already), let me know about it
(so I can mark it as a member), then head over to
this article to see how to post your character profile. If you have any
questions about syntax, the Wiki Help link below the bottom right corner of the
editing field should be able to inform you.
Besides all that, be thinking about where you want to see things go after this
storyline, and what your characters might be up to after all this is done. We'll
be at a big, open fork in the road, and with some long lost members returning to
us, there should be plenty of opportunities to make somethin' interesting out of
it.
Oh, also, I'm probably going to take some time to move our forums over to phppBB3. They'll be less pretty for a while, until we can cook up a nice template (which at my current level of laziness will be a long way off), so expect the forums to be down sometime this week, as well.
Wiki? (12/27/07)
Looking at the site, its structure, and the confusion that tends to kick prospective RPers in the face whenever they try to figure out our story's history and how its characters intertwine, I wondered for a moment what would make it easier--What would help link everything together?
If you've ever used a wiki such as Wikipedia, you already know how very magical they are--Even more so if you've contributed to one. So for this reason, I've installed a wiki on our server, and it's now in the testing phase. The software isn't exactly the absolute best or the fastest, but it has a lot of features, and, well, I couldn't get the WikiMedia Foundation's stuff (i.e. Wikipedia's software) to be compatible with our server, so it's our only viable option.
Assuming people end up liking it and begin contributing to it sufficiently, it may replace many of the pages of this website. Go to the forums if you want to take a peek; you'll find a link in the SCC Discussion area. I don't want spambots to stumble on it too easily, so I'm keeping the link in a place where it's only accessible to registered and activated forum users.
Got suggestions? Sling'em my way.
Functional again. (11/07/07)
Though it's probably already apparent (since the RP forums have been unlocked and several new threads have popped up), we've resumed activity. We're keeping our cast contained to a pretty small group, and not all our players are yet involved (or even able to get involved), but things are flowing at a normal pace, so hey. Can't ask for much more than that.
Well... other than some protagonists. Odd as it is, it seems as though we've got an almost entirely antagonistic cast so far--Definitely a new precedent. Most of our previous storylines have been plagued by an overabundance of hero-wannabe characters and a drought of villains, but for once, it's the other way around. The great thing about it, though: People with ill intent don't need do-gooders to stir up conflict. They're perfectly content to scuffle amongst themselves, and that conflict and tension can keep things interesting for a good, long while. Maybe once we get get far enough along, we'll actually see the return of the official cast, too. That should balance things out, I figure.
Gravedigging. (10/08/07)
The RP forums
have been shut down for over a month. Some of you know why, others don't, but
either way, the decision to give it a break was followed by an extremely busy
schedule for me, so there hasn't been much of an opportunity to revive the
story, nor has there been much will.
Things aren't totally dead, here. We've still got our webspace prepaid for a
good stretch of time, and I still have characters and fun little time-wasting
story ideas that I'm much too attached to. I don't want to let these things go
unless I have to. I know some other members have probably grown disinterested in
the group during its absence, but to be honest, that's what I was kind of
shooting for. With this big break, I figure that only the people who are truly,
seriously interested and devoted will still be around, and thus, there'll
actually be some modest excitement and "newness" about it when it does
return.
That said, the "rejoining" process will hopefully begin soon. Until then, keep
an eye on the discussion area for polls about the story and its content, and
info on how to get into it when it returns.
Going in a new, actually friendly direction. (08/21/07)
I finally got around to doing a crappy new FAQ and Contact page, and updated the join form to be a little less verbose (though it's still pretty bloated). Also, I've taken an initiative to clean things up around here--Like, in every way I can.
I'm going the whole nine yards, here. I've already removed members and content I thought to be detrimental for the story, and I'm currently rewriting the way administration is done. Rather than iron-fist rule laid out by a single, pedestal-sitting leader (yeah, that'd be me), with the occasional vigilante justice haphazardly wielded on occasion by administrative underlings (you know who you are), we're adopting an organized system. There will be but one administrative entity, and behind it, all of the admins will do their thing in a manner that's more professional and, more importantly, friendly. All administrative action on the forums will be made by the Administrator account (administrative privileges have been removed from all individual admins' accounts), and all administrative actions on AIM will be made by admin@spindash.net (now a registered AIM user). Similarly, all e-mail contact will be handled by admins at that e-mail address, as well.
I don't know if it'll work, but by doing this, I'm hoping to reduce the image of what looks like an intimidating, oversized admin team (for such a small group, anyway), and remove myself from the centralized, lone-leader role. I don't want to do everything anymore--I don't like doing everything. Not only will it better ensure that things are done more fairly to give others more power and control, but it'll also ease my overall stress.
To see exactly who you're going to be dealing with, see the newly revived contacts page. Here's to hoping this works out; I really wanna turn this place around, and make it less intimidating to join, and more fun to participate in. More than ever, your input is greatly appreciated, so if you have any suggestions, send them to admin@spindash.net.
Five years. (05/31/07)
It's seriously been five years as of this month. Technically, we had our first (only barely successful) RP session on May 13 of 2002. Since then, things have been hilly--Really hilly--but we've held on, endured, and had some decent fun down the line.
I long ago said we'd have something special for the fifth anniversary, but sadly, there's just not much to be done. Life's got a lot of us in a death grip, myself included, so I can't even really finish the website, and Mie definitely doesn't have it in her to do any sort of anniversary picture. So, for now, things continue on as per the norm. For now, I'm just gonna go ahead and make sure all of the links in the characters section point where they belong, since all character profiles on the forums have been updated, standardized in format, and reposted, and then get back to brainstorming for the next big storyline.
If you've been sidelining and considering joining, the next couple of weeks will probably be a good time for it.
Rock on, folks. It's been fun. Maybe if we're crazy enough, we'll be seeing a 10th come up sometime around 2012. ... Actually, you can just shoot me if that happens. Let's enjoy it while it lasts.
Forum problems. (05/09/07)
If you notice the forums behaving erratically lately, don't worry too much. The server's just being a little funky. It'll clear up in time.
Anyway, still not much to say other than that we're still truckin' along. The website itself is the least of my many very-real-life-oriented concerns, at the moment, so it's gone neglected for quite a while, and will probably continue to suffer in this way. As always, though, much more up-to-date information can be found all over the forums.
As for joining, new members are still welcome. We're about to reach a major turning point in the story where things will probably go quite freeform for a while, so the more new people, the better. Don't be shy. We don't bite... unless you don't read the character guidelines. Heheh.
Oh, whoops. It's 2007 already? (03/05/07)
Time sure does get away. Yet again, it's literally been months since I've updated this front page. At this point, though, there's (as usual) not a lot to say. We're still rollin' along, and thankfully even picking up a few new members here and there. Things are well. I wish I could say I'm doing something for the site itself, but as usual, anything I've said about that in the past were empty promises. Besides, the forums are really where the meat of the information can be found, anyway.
In other news, we're creeping toward our next RP anniversary. We'll have been around five frickin' years, soon enough. Crazy, isn't it?
Merry Christmas (12/25/06)
A brief update on the Sonic Site Awards (12/18/06)
We got beaten
by this.
I figured it'd boil down to a matter of whoever had more members to vote for
them, and it seems I assumed correctly. We were beaten by a site where the
webmaster didn't even bother to replace his HTML generator's "Page title" text
with an actual website title (take a peek at the name of the window when you
open the link). [Update: It seems snide commentary caused it to get fixed. Heheh.]
Blue enough for you?
Anyway, I can't say we were driving very hard to win this one, so I'm not exactly heartbroken, but it's still a comical outcome, in a sort of morbidly stupid way. Ah well.
SCC nominated for TSS Sonic Site Awards 2006 (12/03/06)
It seems we've been nominated for the Sonic Stadium Sonic Site Awards this year! Specifically, we're up for the "impressive layout" award. Check it out here. If you wanna pitch in a vote for us, then log in at TSS, head on over to the Website Awards section, click the dropdown box in the right column, and select "4. Impressive Layout"--Our name will then appear in the list of available sites. Rock on.
Keeping hedgehogs an endangered species since 2002 (12/01/06)
I don't really
have anything in particular to say, so I'm just pumping out an announcement to
indicate to any of you lurkers out there that we're still alive. Things are
moving reasonably, and, before long, this huge friggin' storyline should be
coming to an interesting close (or turning point, anyway).
So. It seems like we're finally running into an actual RPer shortage.
Who'dathunk, right? Yeah, yeah, I know, we run 90% of all applicants off in the
first ten minutes, and 9% more within a month or two. Granted, even if we
didn't, we wouldn't be able to squeeze anyone new into our story at the moment,
anyway, but this is probably the longest stretch we've ever gone without anyone
even applying. What do I blame? Probably our own anti-new-Sonic-stuff policies.
A lot of younger fans out there are probably playing Sonic The Hedgehog
on Xbox 360 and madly pleasuring themselves to the very thought of another
two hedgehogs being added to the series, only to come here, see that we're
having nothing to do with it, and become greatly disappointed. Will that change?
Not so long as I'm lording over this little shred of the mighty network of
interconnected magic boxes we call the mother interwebs.
By this point, you must be wondering: Does he really have anything relevant
to say? Only a couple of things. One: I've stopped deleting inactive
accounts, because there's no reason to, really. If you register here and
activate your account, you can expect it to stay indefinitely, unless you really
tick somebody off, or your username is inappropriate, or just... makes my skin
crawl. Two: If you're thinking about joining, now's a good time to start kicking
around character ideas and asking questions. I predict that the doors for
involvement will be blown open by the beginning of next year.
Oh, by the way: If any of you lovely members can think of a way to advertise
relevantly without spamming... please do. We could really use the visits and
publicity.
RP experiment coming to a close; character profiles going up? (10/10/06)
Many of you have likely noticed the mysterious "RP Experiment" forum on our main forum listing. Well, if you've been following the main story, you'll soon find out what that's all about, because it's all comin' to a close. That's all I'll say about that for now, though.
Beyond that, there've been some slight changes to the characters page. I've removed links to outdated original character pages and added links to updated character profiles on the forums. You will of course need to be logged in to view these profiles, but nonetheless, it should make things a bit more convenient. This is only a temporary solution, however. As time goes on, we'll hopefully get real character pages up for some of these folks. First things first, though--I really want to get the main official cast's updated pages taken care of before moving on to more original characters.
Next up on the list: Probably Knuckles or Tails, if we can figure out what to do for either's art. Vector's definitely going to be added soon, though, since usable official art now exists.
News for the sake of having news. (09/18/06)
Unfortunately, there's not a lot to report on, here. There's been no progress with the site, and the story has slowed down pretty badly. But, hey--It always does when Mie and I take a vacation. It sort of throws off the whole rhythm of things.
Anyway, as usual, we're working on getting it back in motion, now. After this storyline concludes, we'll look at a new, perhaps more variable way of running the story, so that getting involved won't be so difficult. It's at least an idea I'm kicking around.
Of reverse motion, the Eggman, and a short hiatus. (09/07/06)
Again, whoops. It's been another month since I updated the news page. Oh well. I suppose that's just the rhythm of things. Either way, not much has changed on the actual website at all, though activity has continued fairly well on the forums. As for new character pages, there haven't been any--Instead, we've taken a step backwards, removing one. Yeah, wouldn't you know it? This makes the second time someone has quit immediately after getting unpaid character art from Mie. Don't think that'll be happening again.
In other, more generic spindash.net news, we're now hosting a new website. After a mighty h4x0ration, the Eggman Empire forums have been taken in as refugees on our little slice of the internet, where they'll hopefully remain happy, healthy, and safe for some time to come. Check them out if you're into that sort of thing.
And, in the last word of news for this update, Mie and I are about to depart for Florida in approximately 40 minutes, so don't expect much to be happening for the rest of this week. We'll probably get back late Monday night, so expect to see things picking up around here Tuesday or Wednesday.
Character pages, continued RPing, etc... (08/08/06)
Whoops. It's been a month since I updated the news page. Well, those of you who have been watching the news and announcements section on the forum know what's going on, but for those of you who use the front page as a gauge of activity... you may want to stop. I'm lazy. I don't update this thing often.
Anyway, in official characters, Sonic, Amy, Charmy, and Espio have gotten new character pages. No, there's no particular rhyme or reason to the order I'm doing this in. As for original characters, Velo, Risu, and Rekk all have pages in the new style, as well. Might be worth giving a check if you just want to see what it looks like. I intend to eventually have all of the character pages looking like that, but, well... it may be a while. It's a long and tedious process, and I'll need Mie to help arrange the graphics, so, with how busy she's been lately, it won't be anything fast.
Regardless, stay tuned, and watch the news and announcements forum for slightly more frequent updates on what's going on.
Oh, what the heck. (07/05/06)
There's no reason to wait until the new character profiles are done before accepting new member submissions. As said in the announcement on the forums, we're again accepting as of now, but remember--It may take a little while for you to be involved, so please, please have patience if you choose to join right now.
Finally getting closer, for real. (07/04/06)
Though it's been nearly forever in the making, we've finally gotten the free time to crack down on some unfinished elements of the website. That said, you can expect the new character pages to be up hopefully no later than the middle of this month, or the end of the month at the latest. Beyond that, you can also expect that we'll start accepting new members once again around that time, or at least trying to. The story's still a bit of a confusing mess for newcomers, but with some space being freed up in the cast, we'll probably start to need some fresh players to liven things up.
Sorry, no more new members. (05/26/06)
This notification is to let everyone know that we're not accepting any new members right now. We're in the middle of a highly transitional stage, looking to try new ways of RPing in hopes of keeping the group active and alive. I can't devote time to helping new people get involved in the midst of all this, so I'm afraid that anyone else who's looking to join will just get turned away until later. My apologies.
Rockin' the 4 year mark. (05/13/06)
Happy 4th anniversary, guys. Yep, believe it or not, this group started as a pretty much nameless Sonic The Hedgehog AOL group back in 2002, with its first session ever on this very date four years ago. After numerous name changes, and even more cast changes through the years, the group's still alive. A bit... feeble, sometimes, despite much higher membership numbers, but alive.
Anyway, most of you are probably expecting a big, long ramble like for the third anniversary. Well... it's late, I'm tired, and you're not getting one. We've had a good run so far, and truth be told, I'm not too certain about the future of the group, but if there's going to be any big celebrating going on, it'll be when/if we hit the five year mark. For now, I'm just gonna lay back, take it easy, and hope we actually get some more role-playing in this weekend.
Have a good one, guys. You're beautiful. (You'll either get that or you won't.)
-Matt
Stayin' alive. (04/28/06)
We're still here, still role-playing, and still having a good time... though next to nothing is happening with the website. Life got in the way. Anyway, I would really like to have the new character page design done before our fourth anniversary, but I'm making no guarantees about that.
And yes, that's right. I said fourth anniversary. As of May 13th, we'll have been on the map for four years. We've gone through numerous names (Sonic The Hedgehog RP Forum on AOL, SEGA Sonic RP at toroimerai.net, and now Sonic Classic Continuity at spindash.net), and even more cast changes (only three of the original players from the first session remain), and we've had lots of ups and downs, but it's still good, and we're bigger and more active than we've been in a long time--So much so that our story has been split into as many as three simultaneous branches at parts. It's admittedly been kinda hard to manage and steer, for me, especially with so many real-life distractions (and far more coming, as I hopefully get a job and start working full time), but I think we'll be good and steady for a long time to come. Just don't expect much in the way of frills. For the moment, we're a group more than a website, so this page is totally on the backburner until Mie and I get the time and will to bear down on it. Stay tuned, nonetheless, and remember to watch the forums for more frequent updates.
Character page, etc. (03/18/06)
I haven't updated the news page in a while, but as those of you who've been keeping up with the announcements on the forums know, we have been doing a little work in the background here and there. For starters, the new character index page is up. However, we've yet to figure out precisely how we're going to do our new character pages themselves, so for now, we still have the old stuff up. In the meantime, I've been making minor tweaks to the data here and there (such as finally updating the age of some characters who've gotten a bit older through the story), but you won't see any major differences until it's time to convert it all over to the new style. Stay tuned.
Self restraint needed. (02/24/06)
Not even 24 hours have passed, and already I've gone back on my word. Remember what I was saying about not bothering with cutting graphics and all that junk yet? Too late. Today, in an obsessive-compulsive web-building rage, I formatted our new rules page. It doesn't have any content yet, but you have a look-see if you click the shiny, pretty, glowing "rules" button to your left. Enjoy Eggman's authority.
First update on the new site. (02/24/06)
As you can probably tell, I haven't had much time to work on things around here. Sadly, I've found that I won't have that kind of leisure time for a while, either. Originally, I had much more ambitious goals for the first version of our new website. Mie already prepared a bunch of gorgeous graphics for me to use, with different colored/character themed designs for each and every page of the site, but I don't have time to cut all the graphics, format them, upload them, and position them properly at the moment. It's a real act of tedium. So, for now, I've opted to get the site up just by using the plain, simple, Sonic-flavored template you see here. Later on, I'll add the different versions. Content is the priority of the moment, however.
We're up and running! ... kind of. (01/17/06)
Not much to be seen, yet. This is just the front page, and really only the tip of the iceberg. Our plans for the website may have proven a bit too ambitious; with a very graphics-intensive approach, and different "themes" for each page, not only will this be a load-time monstrosity for our non-broadband visitors, but also a huge time sink for me as I struggle to get everything pieced together and placed functionally on the server.
For now, you'll notice that all of the buttons redirect to our old website. This is intentional. We're going to have to keep using it for a while until we finish up here, so please bear with the mess. If you find any compatibility issues with your browser, let me know at sonic@spindash.net. I've got a feeling that this site won't be too friendly to those who don't keep their software updated on at least an every-few-years basis...
Keep an eye out for updates in the coming weeks.
